Abstract
The article explores the extents ofa comparative analysis between the zinacantec modern crosses placed in caves (expression quitewell documented in thescientific literature) and the classic Maya rock art (paintings, carvings, and modified speleothem sculptures). Considering both demonstrations like parts of a same phenomenon because of its nature —being plastic expressions isolated situated deliberately by the men in the interior of the caves—, the present exercise examines the implications that on our understanding of the Maya classic rock art can carry a study of the functions that have the zinacantec crosses in caves. The purpose is to find similar functions in the classic Maya rock art to have a better understanding of the reasons that had the ancient Maya to elaborate this type of art in the depths of the earth.
