Abstract
The basic notion of the geological principle of isostasy is that vast regions of crust such as mountain belts and shield areas float on a sublayer. The notion of floating gives rise to thoughts of Archimedes (287-212 BC), the so-called father of hydrostatics. Vacher discusses the Archimedean slices of the Earth's crust.
