Abstract
During the last term of Tampa Mayor Sandy Freedman (1991-1995), Scott Paine served on the Tampa City Council (1991-1999). He also served under Mayor Dick Greco (1995-2003). The interview begins with Dr. Paine describing his campaign and the circumstances that inspired him to run. He also discusses the issues of historic preservation, crime, neighborhood revitalization and the controversy that surrounded the building of the Tampa Convention Center. Dr. Paine talks about what he considers the most significant issues that came before the Tampa City Council during Mayor Freedman's tenure: the human rights ordinance and sexual orientation issue; the Florida Aquarium "deal"; and the Whydah Pirate Ship. The interview ends with a discussion of the conflicts Mayor Freedman faced regarding Gasparilla and Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla.
