Note
Note with the photograph reads, "This photograph and the succeeding six sets of photographs, depict the unusual occurrence in daytime of the Black Skimmer visitation 40 miles inland to fresh water lake, several days after a severe freeze (temperatures as low as 24-26 degrees) which may have been the direct cause of this rare behavior of this salt-water bird. The above photograph was taken by Donald J. Nicholson, on Lake Eola, Eola Park, Orlando, Florida, on January 9, 1958. Again on January 10, 1958, I photographed these same birds. There were 13 Black Skimmers seen and heard “barking” both days. They were rather inactive and permitted a close approach—18 to 20 feet—and when disturbed on the sandbar, would fly and alight on the sidewalk and the grassy lawn in the park. Often during these two days the birds were found with heads tucked into feathers on backs “sleeping.” This is the first time in 57 years that I have seen Black Skimmers in Orange County, Florida in daytime. But often at night."
