Note
The Lily White Society was founded in 1935 by J.W. Brown, B.C. Cohen, Mrs. Corrine Alexander, Will James, Mrs. A.D. Heygood, Mrs. Bessie Barefield, and Mrs. Selma Smith. It was a fraternal organization where dues paid for flowers and a grave space and members would act as pallbearers for the deceased. It was created to allow Black men dignity in death.
