Abstract
Dr. Charles Mahan received his MD from Northwestern University Medical School in 1964 and completed his residency at the University of Minnesota in 1965. In this oral history interview, Dr. Mahan describes the experiences that spurred his interest in public health, especially in the areas of family planning, prenatal and postpartum care. He also recounts his recruitment by the state of Florida to become a state health officer and director of the state public health program. Dr. Mahan provides details on several state initiatives, including Healthy Start and the North Central Florida Maternity and Infant Care Project. He also describes the successful implementation of a five-year state plan to reduce infant mortality. Throughout the interview, Dr. Mahan stresses the importance community engagement, coalitions, and the promotion of public health to both the general public and legislature. Dr. Mahan concludes his interview by discussing his time as dean in the College of Public Health and the University of South Florida and his role as director of the Lawton and Rhea Childes Center for Healthy Mothers and Babies.
