Abstract
Interview with George Gehres, sanitation consultant, member of the Bureau of Local Health Services and Florida State Board of Health. Gehres was also a coordinator of the state board’s accident prevention program. George Gehres primarily focuses on his personal history; beginning with an early career in music that led to his study of bacteriology while simultaneously running as the director of music at the University of Pittsburgh. Gehres continues to discuss his early years in public health, travelling to rural areas in West Virginia and Illinois. Gehres also spent time in Greece during World War II and in Yugoslavia during the early 1990s, helping out refugees in both scenarios. George proceeds to discuss his experience training new public health employees, the family of Dr. George Dame and their deep connection with public health, and his time as a laboratory planner and sanitarian when he finally started working in Florida Public Health. Gehres currently spends his retirement researching the history of Florida’s public health system.
