Abstract
In this oral history interview Jack E. Wroten, longtime employee of the Center Disease Control (CDC) and the Florida Department of Health, discusses his time as director of Florida’s sexually transmitted disease program. He describes his role in both the control and prevention of various diseases impacting Florida, including syphilis, gonorrhea, and HIV/AIDS. Wroten talks about working with the migrant population and his various outreach efforts. He also describes the importance of screening programs and partner notification in combating transmittable diseases. Wroten details some of the challenges he has encountered such as limited funding, multiple priorities, and inadequate staffing. He also recalls the impact of administrative reorganizations such as the formation of the HIV-STD-TB program in 1993. He finishes his interview with a discussion of pictures, books, and paraphernalia related to his career in Florida’s public health system.
