Abstract
Interview with Dr. John Dame, a retired public health official with over 46 years of experience working for the Polk County Health Department of The State of Florida Department of Health. The interview focuses on Dr. John Dame’s father, Dr. George A. Dame, a prominent figure in Florida’s public health history. Dame narrates his father’s career and accomplishments by combining personal experience, photographs, and book excerpts. Dame summarizes his father’s early years in Homerville, Georgia and his move to Inverness, Florida, where George would practice medicine for the next 36 years. Dr. George Dame then left Inverness to work as the director of field services for the State Bureau of Health in Jacksonville; during his stay, George would found notable public health organizations such as the American College of Preventative Medicine in Jacksonville and the American Association of Public Health Physicians. Dr. John Dame discusses the aspects of his father’s private life: George’s marriage, children, as well as the roles that accompany working as a health officer in Jacksonville. Dr. Dame concludes by discussing his family’s extensive link to Florida public health, and how his father’s fame in the public health community has affected his family. Dr. John H. Dame retired in 1999 and continues to take an active role in environmental health.
