Abstract
Dr. John Mulrennan, Sr. (1906 – 1985) graduated from the University of Florida in 1932 with a degree in agriculture with a major in entomology. After graduation, he went to work as an entomologist with a local citrus company before beginning his career in public health with the state of Florida in 1933. He would eventually become known as the father of mosquito control in Florida. In this oral history interview, Dr. John Mulrennan, Jr. talks about his father’s career accomplishments in public health and medical entomology. Dr. Mulrennan, Jr. recounts his father’s work with renowned malariologists at the Rockefeller Foundation. He recalls his father’s establishment of a malaria control program for the state of Texas and his work as chief entomologist and director of the Bureau of Entomology of the State Board of Health for Florida. Specifically, he describes his father’s entomological fieldwork throughout the state and his attempts to implement programs to control the vector through research-based inventions such as source reduction and pesticides. Dr. Mulrennan, Jr. also explains his father’s important legislative work and its impact on the economic development of the state of Florida.
