Abstract
Evidence tracking is central to the operation of forensic science laboratories. New technologies have the potential to revolutionize the entry, cataloging, and tracking of evidence. One of these technologies, radio frequency identification devices (RFID), has not been methodically tested for forensic use, either in the field or in the laboratory. This paper reports on a first-principle approach to testing RFID technology on evidence in various storage scenarios. The system yielded higher variance results than anticipated, from 0% read accuracy in some situations and nearly 100% in others. Research like this can demonstrate gaps in technology and application for forensic use.
