Abstract

As both the necessity of Historically Black College and Universities (HBCUs) and the quality of Teacher Education programs nationwide continue to be questioned, we contend that a careful analysis of teacher education programs at HBCUs not only will add nuance to the discussion, but more importantly reaffirm the importance of teacher education programs and the relevance of HBCUs. This chapter examines the experiences of Bethune-Cookman University graduates who are K-16 educators and the impact their preparation has had on current career practices. Examination of the factors that contributed and continue to contribute to their success are included. We also highlight their voice through narrative description and provide a sense of both a historical and present relevance of the institution and responsibility to preparation of twenty-first century teachers of color.
