Abstract
On the 150th anniversary of Florida's statehood, historians Nick Wynne and James Horgan compiled a collection of essays that illustrated the history of Florida by focusing on the major events in each decade since the mid-1800s. Schnur wrote the chapter that examined the battle between old Florida (the "Pork Chop Gang") and new Florida (the "Lamb Chop" politicians) that took place over education, the role and scope of government, legislative apportionment, race relations, and the civil rights movement. This article appears in its original form from the book; each author retained copyright and redistribution rights for their works. St. Leo College (now St. Leo University) no longer operates the press.
