Abstract
Transitions occuring in the field of mental retardation in Canada during the past 15 years are surveyed. Three major areas receive specific review: (1) diagnostic and assessment processes are reviewed with a discussion of new emphases in criterion referenced testing, adoptive functioning measurement, screening, and neuropsychological testing; (2) program and service development is reviewed with special emphasis placed on a discussion of forces influencing the scope and breadth of these new programs; (3) selected applied research programs are discussed focusing upon vocational and daily living skills, communication and language intervention and remediation, and motor skills and play development with young mentally retarded children.
