"In his Narrative of the Uncommon Suffering (1747-1760), Briton Hammon recounts a series of remarkable confinements and escapes, before returning to servitude under his captor General John Winslow. While sailing from Massachusetts to Jamaica, Hammon’s ship wrecks off 'Cape Florida,' where the enslaved African lives among natives for five weeks."
