Disparo en Red (Cuban science fiction magazine)

Disparo en Red began as a science fiction and fantasy e-zine freely distributed by email from 2004 to 2008. Its focus was the publication of theoretical articles on the genre, short stories, and short novels from classical Anglo-Saxon science fiction (not published in Cuba), and it offered space for the writings of young Cuban authors. By 2005, following the publishing crisis in the 1990s, there was no room for new authors to publish books. Neither were there many competitions that would include publishing works in print. In addition, each genre magazine project was rejected with the justification of the publishing crisis. The idea arose to use email as a tool in our favor. In the fifty issues of Disparo en Red, current international views about the genre with theoretical articles from Cubans appeared. Previously unpublished texts were published that subsequently became contest winners and were published in print. Cuban fans could also read classics from Robert Heinlein, William Gibson or Phillip K. Dick. Most important, however, was learning not to depend on one newsletter to read about the genre. Novels in digital format began to be distributed in an unofficial manner and as a result the followers of this genre had a more complete culture of science fiction. Given that in Cuba much science fiction coming from socialist countries is published but little science fiction from the west, it also served to improve and update concepts about the genre. Most importantly, it served as a precursor to other newsletters, digital magazines, blogs and websites from the island. In publishing the fiftieth issue the authors believe they have in a small way propelled Cuban science fiction forward. Disparo en Red fue un proyecto de e-zine de ciencia ficción y fantasía que se distribuyó de manera gratuita por correo eléctrónico desde el 2004 hasta el 2008. Estaba orientado a publicar artículos teóricos actuales sobre el tema, cuentos y noveletas de la ciencia ficción clásica anglosajona (no publicada en nuestro país) y ofrecer un espacio para la obra de jóvenes escritores cubanos. Por entonces, tras la crisis editorial de los años 90, no había espacios para que los nuevos escritores publicaran libros. Tampoco había muchos concursos que incluyeran la publicación de la obra en papel. Además, cada proyecto de una revista de género era rechazado con la justificación de la crisis editorial. Entonces surgió la idea de usar el correo electrónico como herramienta a nuestro favor. En los 50 números de Disparo en Red se intercalaron opiniones internacionales actualizadas sobre el género con artículos teóricos de cubanos. Se publicaron textos inéditos que después resultaron ganadores en concursos y fueron publicados en papel. Y el fandon cubano pudo leer a clásicos como Robert Heinlein, William Gibson o Phillip K. Dick. Pero lo más importante fue que se aprendió a no depender de un boletín para leer sobre el género. Las novelas en formato digital han comenzado a distribuirse de manera no oficial y los seguidores del género ya tienen una cultura de ciencia ficción más completa. Puesto que en Cuba se publicó mucha ciencia ficción procedente de los países socialistas pero poca ciencia ficción occidental. También sirvió para mejorar y actualizar conceptos del género. Y lo más importante. Sirvió de precedente a otros boletines, revistas digitales, blogs y páginas web del género en la isla. Al publicarse el número 50 los autores consideramos que habíamos impulsado un poco más la ciencia ficción cubana. Así que decidimos cerrar el proyecto para dar paso a nuevas ideas. -- Erick J.
