Abstract
This recording presents a narrated historical account of El Círculo Cubano de Tampa and the development of Ybor City from the late nineteenth century through the early twentieth century. The narrative traces the establishment of the cigar industry, Cuban immigration to Tampa, labor organizing, and political activism connected to the Cuban War of Independence, including José Martí’s speeches in Ybor City. The program also documents the evolution of the Cuban Club as a cultural and social institution listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
