Abstract
This chapter provides an overview on sextortion, an emerging form of image-based sexual abuse that occurs when an offender threatens to distribute a victim’s sexually explicit images, videos, or information unless they comply with a variety of demands. Sextortion is part of an overall continuum of behavior in which intimate images are non-consensually created, produced, distributed, or used to coerce behavior. However, sextortion is distinct in its diversity of uses and victim experiences. This chapter discusses sextortion victimization, perpetration, and the investigative and legal challenges associated with sextortion. This chapter also ends with a discussion on how to remedy these challenges through research, policy, and practice.
