Abstract
This ornately carved sandstone monument, said to weigh 20 tons and standing 2 meters high, is at the Archaeological Park and Ruins of Quiriguá, an inscribed UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Department of Izabal, Guatemala. The piece was 3D laser scanned in 2019 during our extensive documentation survey at the site by our USF Libraries CDHGI team. We utilized structured light scanners at various sub-millimetric resolutions on this monument. Besides the rich iconography carved on this ceremonial throne, the text in the cartouches describe the founding of the Quiriguá dynasty (see also Matthew Looper’s Quirigua: A Guide to an Ancient Maya City, 2007 for discussion and additional references). Alt Text
A three-dimensional model of an immense, curved sandstone monument with ornate carvings set upon a flat, rocky surface. Prominently featured is a detailed carving of a seated, humanoid figure in ornate dress, including a tall, complicated headdress. When viewed from afar, the figure is seen to be seated inside the mouth of some kind of fantastical, reptilian creature, as evidenced by the shapes of the carvings that surround them, including deeply inset eyes and pointed teeth. The model includes annotations that the viewer can select for additional information or visual details.
