Abstract

President Carter made this coffee table from old pine lumber from a barn. The wood was salvaged from an old horse trough. Today, the table is used in the Carter home in Plains, Georgia, lovingly placed in the den and used for informal meals. Noted features are butterfly joints across the top surface that were used to join the two boards. The craftsmanship and furniture construction of President Carter is part of a 3D digital and archival program being undertaken by the Digital Heritage and Humanities Collections in the University of South Florida Libraries in collaboration with the Carter Family, the National Park Service, and the Friends of the Jimmy Carter Historical Park.

Alt Text

A three-dimensional model of a rectangular, wooden coffee table with a shelf situated between its four legs. Most of the table is stained to a medium-light brown color, save for the visible sections of five butterfly joints that are seen in a line across the center of the tabletop, which have been stained a darker color. This adds a small, decorative element to the table's surface. Six annotations have been added to the model, which the viewer can click on to provide additional information. The model can be rotated, moved, and zoomed in and out to allow for viewing of additional details at multiple angles.
