Description
In a kinetic and interactive workshop, participants will discover how readers theatre engages reflective judgment — a component of critical thinking John Dewey described as a perplexed consideration of problems that cannot be solved with current understanding and logic — or with absolute certainty (even among experts). After a quick intro, session participants will perform/read a short contention-filled script (acting talent not required). Afterward, a guided group discussion will demonstrate the potential of reflective questioning and collaborative solutions. It invites learners to step into the shoes of people they may disagree with as a means to unpack complex, “gray area” issues in creative, playful, yet academically rigorous ways. Readers theatre brings complex topics to life and promotes robust discovery about polarizing issues. Its goals: challenge biases, foster greater understanding, and explore the plurality of grounded opinions. Employed across the humanities and the sciences (English, business, ethics, social science, biology, medicine…) this teaching and learning approach engages critical thinking with a disarming, yet provocatively engaging method. Session attendees will leave with ideas and tools to help them incorporate readers theatre into any course using existing and original scripts — even let students write and perform scripts based on course-related research.
