Abstract
Migration is an important driver of change within families and households. In this chapter, we discuss scholarship on migration in families and households in three primary categories: (1) gender and intergenerational shifts in marriage and conjugal relations; (2) transnational parenting; and (3) reconfigured family structures and practices. We synthesize dominant themes within each category and provide specific case studies that contribute robust thematic and conceptual insights. We conclude with suggestions for additional reading, watching, and listening resources for readers who would like to engage the material at a deeper level. Although scholarship on migration’s role in shifting family and household dynamics has grown and diversified within recent years, there is need for further research, particularly studies that examine constraints and strategies for coping among families in contexts of systematic marginalization and structural inequalities.
