Abstract

A lesson plan for high school social studies students that explores the history and overbuilding of Oaklawn Cemetery in St. Petersburg, Florida. Students read a Tampa Bay Times article about graves beneath Tropicana Field’s parking lot and analyze case studies from New York, Los Angeles, and Richmond to compare national patterns of erasure and preservation. Group activities focus on civic responsibility and how local communities can respond to forgotten or buried cemeteries through acknowledgement, memorialization, and reform.
