Abstract
A lesson plan for grades 9–12 examining the historical accuracy of claims about Black Confederate soldiers. Students investigate whether individuals such as Richard Quarls and Joseph Brownlowe were Confederate soldiers or enslaved people forced into service. The activity uses primary and secondary sources to build skills in historical sourcing, contextualization, and evaluation of bias and authenticity.
