Abstract
Opened in 1985, this Shriners Hospital is located on the University of South Florida campus. The low, emphatically horizontal building meanders in a complex pattern of curves and angles, block-like formations and canopies, on the slight incline of its site. Texture, colors, and shapes give it abundant variety, while from a distance the atria's skylights form prismatic highlights. Throughout the interior, exposed concrete columns continue a pattern started under the large canopy over the entrance, with glass brick in concrete squares. Glass brick is also found in the auditorium, where it flanks a ramp. The finest space is the two-story play area and all-purpose room, which moves outside under the curved canopy of the terrace and further to the playground. This is a view of the playroom.
