Despite the national push, healthcare workers compliance with Standard Precautions (SP) and Transmission-Based Precautions show significant gaps in both understanding and implementation.1 The conundrum of hospital nosocomial infections obfuscates the threat to patient safety.2 The purpose of this study is to examine staff compliance with infection control policies by infection type within a multi-hospital system. A quantitative, causal-comparative design was used to identify differences across groups. The independent variable was the ‘type of isolation’ assigned by the infection control practitioner. The dependent variables were staff adherence to the infection control policies including: 1) Isolation sign on patient’s door ; 2) Isolation sign on the patient’s medical record; 3) Education sheet on the patient’s medical record; and 4) The education sheet was completed. Initially a multi-variate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was conducted to compare differences across groups. For significant findings, one-way Analysis of variance (ANOVA) contrasts were conducted on each dependent variable. The MANOVA results revealed statistically significant differences as evidenced by Wilk’s Λ (16, 612= 0.83, p<0.0001. One-way ANOVA contrasts identified three significant criteria: 1) Many of the patients (69%) had the correct ‘Isolation sign on their door’ (p<0.001); 2) Over half of the patients (52%) had ‘isolation sign’ on their medical record (p<0.0001); and 3) Half of the patients (50%) had ‘a completed education sheet’ on their chart (p<0.05). Hospital acquired infections continue to threaten hospital patients safety worldwide. Effective prevention necessitates strict compliance among healthcare workers. Protecting patients demands consistent evidence-based interventions in order to maximize patient outcomes.
