Description
The Ocmulgee Mounds in Macon, Georgia, were built around 900 BCE, representing indigenous land ties and cultural architecture in North America. Turning the Ocmulgee Mound site into a UNESCO Sacred Natural Site will ensure the site's protection, its cultural significance, educational opportunities, historical importance, and environmental resources. This research project will examine the cultural, historical, and environmental importance of the Ocmulgee Mounds and evaluate its eligibility for becoming a UNESCO Sacred Natural Site. The research findings show that the Ocmulgee Mounds site meets the required expectations for becoming a UNESCO Sacred Natural Site. Ocmulgee Mounds is a site that must be preserved due to its historical, environmental, and cultural significance. Preserving through UNESCO Sacred Natural Site status would ensure that this history, environmental wonders, and cultural relevance are preserved for future generations as best as possible while honoring the late generations. The Muscogee people consider the Ocmulgee Mound site to be their sacred ancestral home. The National Park Service currently works with the Muscogee Nation on preservation of the sacred cultural space and the environment.
