Abstract

On October 23rd and 24th 2025, 74 persons - 27 Fishermen, 22 Tour guides, and 25 local residents from different sectors such as hospitality and education-gathered in Caye Caulker for a collaborative workshop aimed at sharing results on cobenefits and values from priority areas for Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) pertaining to mangroves and coral reefs, particularly mapping and valuing mangroves NbS, resident perceptions toward mangroves on private property, and coral reef NbS fisheries supply chains. We also gathered input from the community to identify management options for coral NbS based on criteria previously identified from workshops (such as coral health, tourism and recreational fisheries hotspots, and social-culturally important areas).

This two-part workshop was part of the Strong Coasts Coastlines and People (CoPE) project which studies the co-benefits of Nature-Based Solutions in terms of contributions to Habitat Extent & Health, Carbon Sequestration, Fisheries, Recreation, Tourism, and Socio-Cultural values.

The workshop was organized by project partners from Seascape solutions, the Natural Capital Alliance (formerly the Natural Capital Project) at Stanford University, and the University of Miami. Project partners from WWF MesoAmerica, and Fragments of Hope Ltd, and Strong Coasts CoPe Community Fellows also participated, helped to facilitate activities, note-take and manage the workshop.

This workshop and activities report continues the Strong Coasts CoPe practice of documenting community knowledge, values, and priorities for the future with the broader aim of communities collectively working to care for ecosystems that are so central to health, livelihoods, and heritage along reef-lined coastlines.
