Note
The San Marino Hotel started as the Sutherland Hotel. In 1902, Southern College, a Methodist liberal arts college, moved into the hotel from their previous campus in Leesburg. However, a 1918 hurricane damaged much of the campus and in January 1921, a fire gutted the main dormitory and administrative building. Instead of rebuilding in the same location, the board of trustees voted in 1922 to move the college to Lakeland where it stands today as Florida Southern College.
Palm Harbor has gone by several names in the past. It was first called "Curlew" in the 1860s and in 1878, a post office called it "Bay St. Joseph." By 1888, it was referred to as Sutherland. The Orange Belt Railway reached Sutherland in 1890. In 1925, they changed the name to Palm Harbor.
