Inscription on base of statue that reads: "Theodoridas son of Laistratos dedicated [this] to Poseidon"
This statue features the Greek god Poseidon, god of the sea. It was first discovered in 1877 on the island of Milos and is made of Parian marble. The statue was found in several pieces, and has been restored together, with portions of the left foot and himation modern recreations while some parts of the nose, beard, and hair are missing. Post-reconstructions, he now stands at 2.35 meters. The god is shown naked to the waist, with a himation hanging around his hips, covering his legs and genitals. He has his right arm raised, most likely to hold a trident, which is now lost. The head is slightly tilted to the left and his gaze directs off into the distance. There is also a dolphin behind the figure which serves as an additional support for the weight of the statue. An inscription on the base confirms the statue's dedication to Poseidon as well as its donor. This object is currently housed in the National Archaeological Museum, Athens.
