Note

This temple in the center of Athens was dedicated to 'Olympian' Zeus, a name given to him from his position as head of the Olympian gods. Construction began in the 6th century during the rule of the Athenian tyrants, who had envisioned building the greatest temple of the ancient world, but did not finish until the reign of Roman Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century CE (638 years later). In the Roman era, the temple included 104 colossal columns, and was renowned as the largest temple in Greece. The temple was short-lived and fell into disuse after being pillaged in a Germanic invasion in 267 CE. Today, 16 of the original columns stand.
