Note
This is the architectural detail from the West Pediment of the Parthenon. The pediment sculpture is situated on the surviving corner of the triangular pediment, a sculpture group depicting the first king of Athens, Cecrops and his daughter Pandrosos. The king is notably portrayed leaning against his daughter while the lower portion transforms into the coils of a serpent. The figures on the monument are a replica with the original pieces preserved at the Acropolis Museum, Athens, Greece. Below the pediment floor is the Doric frieze consisting of alternating triglyphs, which are vertically channeled blocks, and metopes, which are square panels featuring weathered reliefs. The West Pediment, in its entirety, depicted the mythical contest between Athena and Poseidon for the patronage and naming of the city.
