Note

This submission includes an MP3 file and a MusicXML file. The MusicXML file is provided to support access, reuse, and adaptation exclusively in music notation software, including MuseScore Studio, Sibelius, Dorico, and Finale. Braille music scores are available upon request.

Minor adjustments were made to the MusicXML file to ensure proper playback. The edits below were made to improve functionality while preserving the musical content.

  • The PDF preserves the dynamics written in the original document. However, the audio has adjusted the dynamics to highlight the piano solo.
  • In measure 52, the lower voice of the left hand contains two dotted half notes that extend beyond the measure. The second dotted half note has been altered to a quarter note to fit the measure's duration.

  • In measure 54, Helps wrote a dotted quarter note and a dotted half note in the lower voice of the left hand. However, this extends past the duration of the measure. The transcription has altered the dotted quarter note into a quarter note.

  • In measures 56-59, Helps writes half-note and dotted half-note durations in the left-hand bassline. However, these notes exceed the measure's duration. Helps may be suggesting a tremolo or another embellishment, but it is inconclusive. Therefore, the transcription has removed the potential embellishment and maintained eighth notes.

  • In measure 92, the software does not permit multiple voices in the bassoon part. The transcription utilized chords and ties to supplement the sound of the multiple voices.

  • In measure 92, the transcription has added a pianissimo in the bassoon part for balance.

  • In measure 100, the left-hand downbeat has been altered from a half note to a dotted half note to complete the measure. This rhythm is mirrored in the right hand.

  • In measure 100, the software does not permit multiple voices in the bassoon part. The transcription utilized chords and ties to supplement the sound of the multiple voices.

  • In measure 156, beat 4 of the left hand has a D# and Eb chord. However, these are enharmonic spellings, and the transcription will only display the D#.

  • In measures 242-346, Helps writes dotted half notes (3 beats) and quarter notes (1 beat) in the same measure. However, this portion of the music is in 3/4, and his notation exceeds the duration of each measure. To fit in the measure, the transcription has changed the dotted half notes into half notes.

  • The improvisatory piano solo beginning in measure 268 consists of multiple barless measures. To preserve readability, the transcription has been divided into 6 measures. Therefore, the measure numbers in the original document and the transcription will not be symmetrical. Measure 269 of the original document corresponds to measure 275 in the transcription.

  • Throughout the improvisatory section, rests have been added, as needed, to keep the right and left hands rhythmically aligned.

  • In measure 312, Helps does not indicate a time signature change, but the measure's duration suggests one. The transcription has changed the time signature to 3/8.

  • In measure 313, the left-hand note values have been altered to dotted sixteenth notes to fit the measure's duration and align with the right-hand notes.

  • In measure 314, Helps does not indicate a time signature change, but the measure's duration suggests one. The transcription has changed the time signature to 3/4.

  • In measure 366, MuseScore does not interpret a 6:5 tuple in this time signature. The transcription has removed the eighth-note rest at the beginning of the measure and created normal one-beat triplets. This change continues in the next four measures.

  • In measure 369, beat 2.5 has been altered to an eighth note to fit the measure's duration.
