Abstract

Tampa Bay is highly exposed to compound hazards, as hurricane-driven storm surges and extreme heat events occur during Florida's summer months. Global studies project an increase in the frequency of these compound events (Zhou et al., 2024) as global temperatures and sea levels are on the rise (Sweet et al., 2021), yet globalscale assessments cannot capture local dynamics. We map storm surge flooding across Tampa Bay with future sea level rise projections and compare with surface temperature data to identify hotspots of extreme temperature and flooding. Nature-based solutions are evaluated at different locations to evaluate how mitigation strategies can enhance community resilience, focusing on socially vulnerable communities.
