Abstract

Closed depressions of moderate dimensions (solution dolines, sinkholes, cockpits) are a widely described feature of limestone terrains but very little attention has been paid to their contemporary hydrological function. In many areas the depressions act as funnels concentrating near surface waters and forming important point-sources of recharge to limestone aquifers. In this paper the mechanisms by which flow is concentrated and then transmitted to the underlying aquifer are examined and a model of depression hydrology is proposed. The model is shown to be useful in explaining the recharge mechanisms of conduit flow dominated aquifers which drain polygonal karst terrain in the Waitomo district, New Zealand.
