Note
Don Thompson Vocational High School opened as a segregated school for Blacks in 1945, named after the director of vocational education for Hillsborough County. In September 1956, it was renamed the Howard W. Blake Comprehensive High School after a Black Tampan, Howard Wesley Blake. The school initially closed in 1970 as Hillsborough County schools desegregated, but opened the next year as Blake 7th Grade Center. The original building was demolished in 1996. The land is now a magnet school for visual communication and performing arts named Howard W. Blake High School. Photo courtesy of Frank Lopez.
