Abstract
Oral interview with Elsie Buff who was the director of the virology program for over 35 years with the state laboratory system in Florida. Starting in 1965, Buff began working on encephalitis in the state lab in Jacksonville. It was during this time that Buff sought to upgrade the facilities in the laboratory and developed a series of protocols for use by its personnel. In addition to her scientific work, she also worked to integrate the state lab which was racially segregated at the time. Buff also describes the technical and fiscal challenges she encountered during the beginning of the AIDS pandemic and the various encephalitis outbreaks that occurred over the years.
