Abstract

An actively engaging session where educators will problem solve ways to integrate concept mapping and mind mapping approaches into existing curriculum to foster critical thinking.

Description

Critical thinking involves identifying and addressing problems, questioning assumptions and exploring alternative solutions. Teaching students critical thinking requires mastering a balance between content knowledge and problem-solving. Educators play an essential role in engaging students in learning activities that foster critical thinking skills. While educators agree that development of critical thinking skills is essential for adult learners, there is little consensus regarding how to effectively teach critical thinking skills. Concept mapping and mind mapping have been shown to be effective learning approaches to facilitate students’ critical thinking and reasoning skills. As with other professions, students enrolled in the Doctorate of Physical Therapy(DPT) program often have difficulty integrating content across the curriculum as they problem-solve complex patient encounters. Recently, the USF DPT program implemented concept mapping in the first year of the three-year program, and found this method strengthened students’ ability to draw connections between concepts taught across the curriculum with the ultimate goal of improving reasoning in patient interactions. Therefore, the purpose of this session is to describe the implementation of concept mapping and mind mapping as problem-solving tools within the USF DPT curriculum and provide participants with practice developing active learning activities incorporating these mapping tools.
