This session provides three actionable strategies to effectively incorporate critical thinking into online learning assignments.

In today's uncertain educational terrain, the need for critically engaging students is more important than ever. This need becomes particularly vital as thetraditional, classroom-based experience now shifts to online and hybrid learning. In this session, I provide three actionable strategies to develop andimplement critical thinking assignments into online undergraduate teaching. First, I discuss how to tolerate open-endedness and ambiguity asassignments are conceived and refined to better connect with student learning outcomes. I next address response ranges for students, highlighting a fewmethods to create effective assignment instructions and grading rubrics. Finally, I offer some insight on how to consistently evaluate critical thinkingassignments – which can vary substantially between students. This includes scaling feedback in courses with high student enrollment. Without a directchannel between the current student experience and course-related critical thinking, we risk a worsened outcome of graduates who lack theseindispensable skills. As educators, this is why it is so important to shift our own teaching priorities into these online and hybrid models. We must all stepup to meet students where they are – both to preserve their learning outcomes and to prepare them for an especially challenging future.
