Abstract
The “Creactive” pedagogical approach is introduced before technology implementation to enhance creative outcomes. Participants will engage in aportion of this creative process.
Description
Technology should not overwhelm the real purpose of any outcome (Catmull 2014). Instead the “Creactive” process should be implemented to helpgenerate “illumination” of an idea—the “Eureka” moments (Botella, M., Lubart, T., Zenasni, F, 2018); especially since “originality is vital for creativity”(Runco 2012), and preparing students to have “higher-order cognitive skills” results in “exceptional student learning” (Saad, 2019). The “Creactive”approach can be defined as a “succession of thoughts and actions leading to original and appropriate productions.” (Botella, M., Lubart, T., Zenasni, F,2018); This can include divergent thinking/brainstorming, sketching, reflection, prototypes, as well as technological tools. Attendees will experience theorganic sketching because “paper-based sketches, more than digital tools, can support the vital process of reinterpretation that generates new ideas”(Stones, Cassidy, 2010); as well as reflection, because the ability to analyze creative outcomes “involves two distinct components; divergent thinking andconvergent thinking” (S. Zmigrod, L. Colzato, B. Hommel, 2015). Results of a classroom study that measured introductory graphic design students’divergent thinking before and after this process; as well as work produced by students who engage and do not engage in the process, will also bediscussed. This is timely because employers of are requesting this skillset—even from non-visual art professions (Graber, 2016). We will discuss theimpact this process can have on other disciplines where ingenuity is expected. For example, engineering and other technology-mediated disciplines thatneed to implement divergent and convergent thinking to spearhead original outcomes.
