This presentation describes assignments in an undergraduate allied health course which provide opportunities for students to apply, analyze, and critically think in groups and individually. Students entering careers in health care are constantly faced with new challenges. A major challenge a student entering the health care field will experience is the ability to work with people from different clinical specialties to establish treatment plans. These challenges require skills in communication and critical thinking. This presentation describes assignments in an undergraduate allied health course which provide opportunities for students to apply, analyze, and evaluate common concepts in the allied health professions. Assignments that incorporate critical thinking include a group leadership simulation, an outdoor leadership challenge course, and an ethics committee review. Simulations and outdoor challenge courses are creative ways to engage the students while providing opportunity for critical thinking outside the typical work setting they would normally expect. These experiences build skills in communication, teamwork, and critical thinking, while recognizing the value of each team member role. A description of each assignments and how it is incorporated into the class will be provided. Lessons learned and recommendations for incorporating these assignments into a course will be included.
