Description
According to Job Outlook 2019, 100% of employers identified critical thinking as necessary for new hires. Therefore, it is our responsibility, as educators, to prepare our students for the workforce. In PHC 4755: Foundations of Evaluation and Research in Public Health, students are tasked with a series of creative and critical thinking assignments that emulate real-world scenarios. Students select from a list of current research questions that researchers face, such as “What factors are most likely to increase vaccine adherence among new parents”. Students work both independently and in teams to creatively consider a variety of research plans. Then, through problem-solving exercises, students develop one cohesive research plan to help us gain knowledge in health and wellness as a discipline. Student research plans include a literature review, population, setting, research design, research methods, and ethical implications associated with conducting this line of inquiry. Finally, students think critically to develop a diverse and well-rounded stakeholder team invested in this research project. Through this course, students gain real-world skills in group collaboration, information literacy, critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving, thus improving the transferability of classroom-based skills to the workforce.
