Abstract
This presentation will demonstrate an in-class activity used to teach students to succinctly report empirical research data and use critical thinking skills during the writing process.
Description
Employers consistently indicate critical thinking skills are a preferred qualification for employees. To promote job placement and career advancement, critical thinking has become a major learning objective for the American Psychological Association and The University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee. Unfortunately, undergraduate students often lack the skills needed to think critically about empirical research findings. Furthermore, when undergraduates are required to write a research based literature review, their papers primarily include simple recall of procedures and results from
empirical research papers. Undergraduate students often struggle to synthesize their own ideas from information they read in published research articles. The objective of this presentation is to show how undergraduate psychology students use critical thinking during the writing process. This presentation will demonstrate an in-class activity used to teach undergraduate students to succinctly report information from empirical research articles while including their own ideas on the topic. After using this demonstration in various courses, students have been observed to be better equipped to critically think and write about empirical research. While students understand what is expected of them and find it easy to accomplish, the majority of students indicate they do not leave enough time before an assignment is due to critically think about what they are writing. Future work will include a suggested time-line and method for improving time management skills as well as a procedure for assessing critical thinking in paper assignments.
