Panel will illustrate how information and data literacy can be integrated into core courses through collaborative work and interactive modules, thereby promoting critical thinking skills.
Description
Presenters will share the collaborative methodologies, tools, and techniques used to integrate critical thinking into core curricula via information and data literacy skills. Information and data literacy are key aspects of critical thinking and embody the central tenets of USF Enhanced General Education curricula (https://www.usf.edu/undergrad/general-education-council/gened-revision/proposed-program.aspx). An information literate student evaluates and uses information effectively and ethically to make strong arguments and create new scholarship. As the amount of data used in everyday life has increased in quantity and complexity, educators are also teaching students about using data in the research process. Data literacy includes such skills as recognizing and understanding basic data types and formats, reading, interpreting and critically evaluating data and data sources, and integrating data into different contexts. Presenters will discuss ways that librarians at USF Tampa and USF St. Petersburg collaborate with academic faculty to embed information and data literacy concepts into core courses so that students apply critical thinking to their research projects. Examples of librarian-faculty collaboration include: - Interactive information literacy modules that can be embedded into Canvas and used with flipped classroom methods; - Faculty toolkit with data literacy resources and activities that can be implemented across disciplines; - Thematic faculty-librarian learning communities focused on integrating information and data literacy skills related to critical thinking into core courses. Attendees will acquire a greater understanding regarding the relationship between critical thinking, information, and data literacy, and its potential application to foster deeper learning.
