Abstract
How can General Education courses engage disenfranchised student artists? Hear about a big idea and learn scalable techniques for integrating creativity into core courses.
Description
Intrinsic motivation inspires creativity. Creativity is the new economy. How do we support student creativity in a one-size-fits-all core curriculum structure? Beginning with the groundwork of Self-Determination Theory (Ryan & Deci, 2000), we consider how students who identify as artists might be encouraged with arts-based choices in General Education courses. Within the framework of Competency, Autonomy, and Relatedness, disenfranchised student artists suffering from a lack of connectedness gain a sense of well-being in coursework infused with intrinsically motivating content (Ryan & Deci, 2000).
