Abstract
Beginning in general core, the art of questioning creates a culture of creative, critical thinkers with an important impact on the success of nursing students.
Description
Critical thinking skills are a requirement of all nurses to make sound clinical decisions that may have a life or death effect. Although not inherent, this skill is crucial for safe practice and efficient nursing care that is typically introduced to the first-year nursing student. One strategy to assist in critical thinking development is the early introduction in general core courses with the use of creative questioning. The method allows time for practice, frequent formative assessment, and a safe practice environment such as simulation and problem-solving assignments and discussions to prepare and foster development central to this crucial skill. This session focuses on the nursing perspective as it relates to critical and creative thinking that is the foundation and is essential for safe practice and efficient nursing care threaded throughout the nursing student's curriculum, and more importantly utilized every day as a practicing registered nurse. Creative questioning can be an interactive, inclusive, and an engaging method to the development of this cognitive skill that with time and commitment, can develop into an intuitive practice.
