Abstract
Photovoice provides a creative experience that can impact campus policy and empower students while engaging them at the highest level of Bloom’s Taxonomy.
Description
With this creative approach to teaching, undergraduate students (in person or online) in public health have to consider health determinants from multiple levels of the Social Ecological Model and understand how these levels impact public health and health behavior. Students work in groups to create a Photovoice presentation to align with the Healthy Campus 2020 Objectives (example: reduce obesity). They develop a research question, select photos to represent facilitators and barriers at each level of the SEM, and make recommendations to the USF presidential advisory committee for how to create a solution. Smaller assignments build employability and technology skills, such as using Doodle Poll to schedule meetings, hosting a Zoom meeting, creating a team contract and creating an outline for the project are scaffolded steps to support productive team collaboration. The presentations are a powerful learning experience and teach students to communicate complex concepts in public health, while providing practical solutions.
