Abstract
The University of South Florida St Petersburg emphasizes student centered success, commitment to community and care for the natural environment as part of its core values. Our Environmental Science Field Methods course exemplifies all these values. In Fall of 2016 we introduced a course that emphasized practical experiential learning with community engagement in environmental sciences. We accomplished these results by requiring the students to partner with each other to investigate local natural areas in Pinellas county. The results of this student research are presented at a public symposium and partially supported through public/private partnerships. The water quality instrumentation company, In-Situ Inc, provides USFSP with substantial loans of instrumentation for the student projects. Local government organizations and businesses provide volunteers to sit on panels in a symposium to judge the presentation of student research results. This course teaches resume-worthy skills to the students, creates bridges to the local community, and builds student and university connections with local organizations.
