KARST SCIENCE FORUM
Bucharest, June 24-27, 2020

ERIS 100 – KARST SCIENCE FORUM 2020

ERIS 100 promotes advanced knowledge exchange and interdisciplinary perspectives on Earth and Life Sciences. Scientists from all over the world, working with state-of-the-art technologies and methodologies in various research fields related to cave and karst science, come for the first time together to acknowledge 100 years of frontier research in speleology and connected sciences, as well as to answer a few significant questions: What have been the advances in these fields over the past century? How do we see the interdisciplinary in cave and karst science today? What are the bridging elements to connect and advance cave and karst science? What are the challenges for karst and cave exploration and research in the future?

The 2020 Karst Science Forum also marks the centennial of the world’s first Institute of Speleology - ERIS, founded in Romania, in 1920, by Emil Racovita, and celebrates ERIS’s history, worth and pledge in both scientific research and preservation of natural and cultural heritage. In this context, the Forum honors Emil Racovita’s legacy as the founder of biospeleology, explorer, researcher and mentor, by taking a fresh look at his contributions to extending the frontiers of knowledge. His renewed relevance in the 21st century is meant to inspire the next generation of scientists.

If we want to understand the past of life on Earth and its present dynamics, as well as to predict the future of life on Earth on a planetary scale, we should know and honor the past; explore, understand and celebrate the present; and embrace the future.

Topics include:

  • Human journey: Anthropology & Human evolution

  • Extreme environments
  • Water as a karst resource
  • Cave deposits and climate change
  • Inferring past environments: from biomolecules to organismal

SUBMISSION TEMPORARILY SUSPENDED

ERIS 100’s organizers have carefully considered the best path forward with consideration of the health, safety, and enjoyment of our attendees and to limit the potential for infection and spread of COVID-19. The situation has escalated significantly worldwide over the past weeks; therefore the decision to postpone the Forum to 2021 was due to circumstances that are beyond our control. We will reopen registration and talk new submission deadlines as soon as we decide on the new Forum dates in 2021.
