Abstract
The House Sparrow (Passer domesticus) was introduced into Texas at Galveston in 1867, and by 1889 was found in Houston, Jefferson, San Saba and Brownsville. Between 1891 and 1905, it was reported from 78 additional localities in all regions of the state. Dispersal is believed to have occurred by incremental expansion from the cities into the countryside and by transport from one city to another in railroad freight cars. House Sparrows had a negative effect on native birds, often driving them from the area and occupying their nest sites.
